What do you need to become a business broker?

  • You have to have a real estate license.
    • Requirements for the real estate license are:
    • You have to be 18 years or older
    • A high-school diploma
    • Complete 63 hours of approved pre-licensing education
    • Pass the Florida Real Estate Salesperson Exam.
  • You have to be able to work with minimum supervision.
  • A business broker’s main activity is meeting business owners and prospective investors.
  • You have to be able to team up with senior brokers in order to be able to handle complex deals.
  • You have to learn all workflows and related documents (of which there are about twenty types).
  • You should be comfortable with basic computer tasks like searching the Web, e-mails, and fast typing.
  • You should feel able to work on the road. The more time a broker spends time in the office, the less time he spends meeting his or her clients. That does not help sales.

Personal traits that will help you win

You need endurance (a lot of it). Business brokers have to knock on many doors before they meet their client. This is where your military training will help you. You will be more consistent in your actions compared to your competitors, and you kick them out of the ring.

You need to control your emotions. The key to success for business brokers is the ability to project self-confidence. This is why people hire you.

Trade limitations

Since business Brokers are paid commissions, there is no guaranteed income. You have to review your financials before you make your ultimate decision.

A career in Business Brokerage is time-consuming, and it is unlikely to be successful without full dedication.
